Stacking Functions on your Homestead: What it is & Why You Should do It

Posted on December 26, 2022December 16, 2022 by Jackson Bowman

Permaculture is all the rage these days, and with good reason. It’s an incredibly sustainable way to live that takes into account the environment and how it can be used to our benefit. There is a specific permaculture technique called “stacking functions” that can be used to maximize your homesteading efforts. But what does that mean, exactly? Let’s break it down.

What is Permaculture Function Stacking?

In Permaculture, stacking functions refers to using multiple elements within your homestead—such as plants, animals, structures, and other elements—to serve multiple purposes. By utilizing as many resources as possible in a single location, you can save time, energy, and money while making your homestead more efficient. Plus, you’re being mindful of the environment by taking advantage of all it has to offer!

For example, if you have an area of land with a pond on it, you could use the pond for fish farming while also planting trees around the perimeter to keep out pests or provide shade for livestock. Or if you want to grow vegetables but don’t have much space available, you could plant vertically and use trellises or other support systems to save space while still producing a bountiful harvest.

Permaculture stacking functions also includes utilizing natural resources like rainwater or solar energy to reduce reliance on outside sources of electricity or water. By doing so, not only are you decreasing your environmental footprint but also saving money in the long run. The possibilities are endless!

Stacking functions is an innovative way to maximize your permaculture efforts without sacrificing quality or sustainability. By utilizing multiple elements in one place—plants, animals, structures—you can create a more efficient homestead with reduced reliance on outside sources of energy and water. Plus it’s an easy way to stay mindful of the environment and make sure that each element serves its purpose as efficiently as possible! So why not give permaculture stacking functions a try? You won’t regret it!

Return of Surplus

Because I have found so much joy in the relationships I have with others, I do not have need for much else. When I have a surplus of anything, I naturally want to share it with others or give it back to the the earth, and it brings me great joy to do so." -JB
