Whether you’re looking for a quick guide on how to plant each type of berry or tips on which berries are best for your region, this blog has all the information you need to make sure your berry garden is off to a great start. Let’s dive in!
Different Types of Berries and How to Plant Them
Raspberries: Raspberries are one of the most popular types of berries, and they can be planted from both seeds and cuttings. When planting from seed, it’s important to remember that raspberries must be planted in full sun and well-drained soil in order to thrive. If planting cuttings, it’s best to purchase pre-rooted raspberry plants from an online nursery or local gardening store. Plant them at least two feet apart and water immediately after planting.
Blueberries: Blueberry bushes require acidic soil with a pH between 4.0 and 5.5 in order to produce sweet berries—so if your soil isn’t acidic enough, you’ll need to add peat moss or sulfur before planting. It’s also important to note that blueberry plants need plenty of sunlight, so don’t forget to pick a sunny spot for your plants! Once you have pre-potted plants (or purchased bare root stock), dig holes twice as deep as the root ball and wider than the roots themselves, then fill with enough water that the roots are completely covered before covering them with soil.
Strawberries: Strawberries are some of the easiest berries out there—all you need is a sunny spot with good drainage (preferably sandy loam), some compost or aged manure, and strawberry runners (or crowns). Plant runners about 8-12 inches apart in shallow trenches no deeper than 6 inches deep; when planting crowns, dig holes slightly larger than their root systems then backfill with compost or aged manure until level with the surface of the ground before watering thoroughly.
