What’s in Store for You at Permaculture Zone 5?

Posted on December 22, 2022December 16, 2022 by Jackson Bowman

If you’re a homesteader looking to make the most out of your space, permaculture zones are the way to go. Each zone is designed with specific elements and activities in mind, helping you get organized and get the most use out of your land. But what exactly can you expect from Zone 5? Let’s take a look!

Zone 5 is the furthest away from your house as it gets. It’s also known as the wilderness area or wild zone, since it’s mostly used for passive observation and nature appreciation. This means that while there are no structures or permanent features built in this zone, it still plays an important role on the homestead.

Zone 5 is mainly used for forestry activities like timber harvesting, firewood production, and collecting wood chips for mulching. It can also be used to create windbreaks or wildlife habitat for animals like deer, turkey and other woodland creatures. You might even find yourself using it as an outdoor classroom or meditation space!

The best part about Zone 5 is that its use doesn’t require a lot of maintenance or input from you—just some occasional pruning and thinning here and there. So if you have some land that’s just too far away to dedicate time to every day but still want to make use of it, Zone 5 is perfect for you!

No matter how big or small your homestead may be, permaculture zones are an excellent way to maximize its potential and get creative with your resources. Zone 5 in particular offers plenty of opportunities to observe nature while producing useful products like firewood and mulch without requiring much effort on your part. So if you haven’t already taken advantage of this amazing resource, now’s the time! Make sure not to miss out on all that Zone 5 has to offer!

Care for Earth

"I believe everything around us is alive and has value. It deserves an opportunity to fulfill and magnify it's purpose." - JB

Care for People

I have found that the happiest and saddest moments in my life revolved around the relationships I have developed with other people. Loving others, nurturing healthy relationships and learning to forgive has brought me the greatest joy. -JB

Return of Surplus

Because I have found so much joy in the relationships I have with others, I do not have need for much else. When I have a surplus of anything, I naturally want to share it with others or give it back to the the earth, and it brings me great joy to do so." -JB
